The Economic Offences Wing of the Delhi Police has filed a new FIR against Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case. Six other individuals and three companies have been named as accused in this FIR.
The allegation is that a criminal conspiracy was hatched to fraudulently acquire AJL (Associated Journals Limited), a company linked to the Congress party. This FIR was filed on October 3rd based on a complaint from the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The ED shared its investigation report with the Delhi Police, and the Delhi Police has now filed an FIR against the leaders involved.
Who has been named as accused?
Under Section 66(2) of the PMLA, the ED can ask any agency to register a scheduled offence. Under this provision, the names of Congress leaders have been added to the FIR. These include Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Sam Pitroda (Indian Overseas Congress chief), and three others. Three companies, AJL, Young Indian, and Dotex Merchandise Pvt Ltd, have also been named as accused.
Accused of purchasing property worth Rs 2,000 crore for Rs 50 lakh
The National Herald case is a long-running controversial case involving the landmark newspaper National Herald, founded in 1938 by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. The newspaper was deeply associated with the Congress Party and was published by a company called Associated Journals Limited (AJL). AJL owned properties worth approximately Rs 2,000 crore in cities like Delhi, Lucknow, and Mumbai. These properties were sold to the accused for a mere Rs 50 lakh.
Congress denies the allegations
The Congress party has long denied the allegations in this case. The Congress party claims that the case is politically motivated. The case poses a political challenge for the Congress party, while the BJP calls it a symbol of corruption. The police may interrogate AJL shareholders. The court is still pending a decision on the ED charge sheet.
